Commission approves 424-sq.-ft. addition to 10 West Laurel St. medical office in historic district

The Georgetown Planning Commission on Feb. 19 approved a 424-square-foot addition to an existing medical office at 10 West Laurel Street (Case No. 2024-22), finding the site-plan and historic-district requirements had been addressed.

David Heewall (Site Works Engineering) presented the application for DC Medical Building LLC and said the addition would create three exam rooms and a small storage closet to ease a current bottleneck in patient intake. "The reason for this expansion is... they need more exam rooms so intakes can be done in private and quicker," Heewall said.

He told the commission the project provides 12 on-site parking spaces where the code requires eight, has stormwater approval and fire marshal approval, and that the contractor expects construction to begin within weeks and take about four months. Heewall said the addition will tie into the existing roofline and match existing exterior materials.

Commissioners asked whether existing bollards and other features adjacent to the site were required by code or were on neighboring property; the applicant and staff said the existing posts are on the adjacent property and that historic-district requirements were addressed in the site-plan review. After discussion, a motion to approve the historic-district site plan carried on roll call; the record shows unanimous affirmative votes.

The commission’s approval is for the site-plan expansion in the historic district; building permits and contractor coordination remain subject to town code and permit review prior to construction.
