Wausau Board of Public Works approves sidewalk, street and lift‑station contracts and votes to enter closed session

The Wausau Board of Public Works on March 17 approved contract awards for a sidewalk repair project and a street reconstruction package, authorized an amendment to the design agreement for the Abel Stormwater Pumping Station rehabilitation and voted to enter a closed session to consider contractor prequalification statements.
The board approved awarding the 2025 Sidewalk Repair Project A to S. D. Ellenbecker for $238,782. Three bids were opened: S. D. Ellenbecker ($238,782), Pembro ($259,725.25) and Petrakis ($275,232.50). A board member moved to approve the low bid; another board member seconded the motion and the board approved the award by voice vote.
The board also approved Amendment No. 1 to the agreement with Strand Associates for the Abel Stormwater Pumping Station rehabilitation. The amendment authorizes up to $75,000 of additional engineering construction‑oversight work, estimated at up to 200 hours, so the design engineer can provide site visits and review shop drawings and electrical work during construction. A board member said construction oversight had not been included in the original contract; another board member seconded the motion and the amendment was approved by voice vote.
For the 2025 Street Construction Project B (Fulton Street, First Street, River Drive and Second Street), the board recommended award to Switlik & Sons as the low bidder at $3,113,313. Board approval was made contingent on final funding transfers and subsequent City Council approval; the board voted to recommend the award to the council so contracts can proceed if the council concurs.
Finally, the board voted to go into closed session under section 19.85(1)(d) of the Wisconsin Statutes to consider and deliberate on prequalification statements for the Equiflow Lehi service line replacement and the 2025 Public Safety Building chiller replacement projects. The motion to enter closed session was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Minutes of the board's March 11 meeting were approved at the start of the session by a board member motion, second and voice vote.
