A volunteer youth coach asked the council Thursday to expand Parlier’s recreational sports program so it serves more age groups, saying broader youth participation helps keep children active and ready for school athletics.
Adan Lozano told the council he coaches local teams and volunteers in city programs; he asked the city to extend sports programming from second through eighth grades instead of the current third through sixth grade range. “What the sports does, it helps out a lot of these kids during the summertime… hopefully the foundations coming around the eighth grade, maybe their freshman year in high school, they’ll feel a little more confident to play for the school,” Lozano said.
Council members and staff said they would coordinate with the city sports director, Rachel, and with school athletics to avoid seasonal conflicts. Mayor Pro Tem Sabrina Rodriguez suggested scheduling city leagues in different seasons so students could participate in both school and city programs.
No vote was required; the item was recorded as a public comment and staff were asked to follow up with the volunteer to explore options and scheduling.
