Resident reports youth forum at Boys and Girls Club, urges continued support for youth programming

"We had an event called The Real Cost at the local Boys and Girls Club with a total of 98 attendees, 14 attendees outside of the community of Owensboro," Paulin told the commissioners, describing a forum where young people asked speakers about peer pressure, entrepreneurship and life choices. She said a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old asked questions about resisting peer pressure and how to invest to start a business.
Paulin urged the commission to consider youth perspectives when evaluating programming and facilities, saying the children at the forum expressed concerns about economic differences among families and that ensuring equal access to local youth programs can help reduce mental-health stresses and exposure to violence. "This will help reduce the mental health and peer pressure," she said.
Paulin told the board she promised the young attendees she would bring their concerns to the commission. No formal action was taken by the commission in response to the public comment; the item was recorded under the open forum portion of the meeting.
