Beaufort County senior programs expanding but face federal funding uncertainty

Beaufort County staff reported strong usage of senior services — including home-delivered meals, in-center dining and field trips — while announcing renovations and new senior community centers and cautioning that federal budget delays could affect programming.
A department representative said the home-delivered meals and in-center dining programs are “really thriving” and noted frequent field trips over recent months. Staff told board members that the Booker T. Washington facility will undergo interior renovations “in the next few weeks” to update flooring, paint and cabinetry, and that the department is beginning planning for two new senior community centers, Agnes and Wesley Felix.
Shane Sager, deputy director, warned that the senior program is funded heavily by federal sources and that the department is monitoring the federal continuing resolution. “Our senior program is funded heavily by the federal government. The continuing resolution from the fiscal side, if it is not — if the budget isn't passed — then we will have to be looking at how we're continuing to run the senior program and those the the dining piece of that,” Sager said.
Staff also reported partnerships and outreach events tied to senior and family services but did not commit to funding adjustments; no formal actions were taken because the meeting lacked a quorum. The department plans to return any required approvals to the next scheduled meeting on May 1.
