Beaufort County recreation staff said youth and adult sports programs are restarting after weather-related cancellations, with several tournaments and new leagues scheduled in coming weeks.
County recreation officials said the department lost about five days of operations in January because of snow and ice but saw “fairly robust” admissions in January and February. Shane Sager, deputy director, delivered the operations update and noted weather-related closures when briefing members.
The department reported registrations are largely closed for the spring season. Adam Christian, athletics staff, said soccer registrations had ended and practices and games for youth baseball and softball will begin this week, with opening days and district- and state-level tournaments incoming. “We hosted the district tournament this past weekend, and then we're hosting the state tournament this upcoming weekend,” Christian said, noting the 8-and-under girls from Bluffton earned an automatic state bid and the 10-and-under girls won their district tournament.
Brock Baum, athletic supervisor, provided town-specific counts for Beaufort: when last checked, there were six Diamond Youth softball registrations and 19 Diamond Youth baseball registrations. He also described a new indoor adult soccer league that began this week and reported plans for a potential summer adult league in Beaufort being developed with possible participation from the YMCA.
The county is piloting its first lacrosse season with two age groups and smaller-sided teams, Baum said, and the program will initially remain within Beaufort rather than travel to neighboring communities. Staff described tentative scheduling for tournaments and additional community-hosted events in coming months. No formal decisions or policy votes were taken during the meeting because the body did not have a quorum.
Less critical operational details discussed included adjustments to schedules because of construction at Charles Lynn Brown Center and the department’s effort to stagger field and facility usage across Burton Wells, Buckwalter and other venues.
County staff said they will advertise summer camp and lifeguard positions in coming weeks and monitor participation levels before finalizing additional league expansions.
