Humane Society of the White Mountains reports intake, spay/neuter activity and facility plans

Josh, representing the Humane Society of the White Mountains, gave the council a year‑end recap for 2024 and an update on spay/neuter activity for 2025.
Josh reported the shelter took in 217 cats and 316 dogs in 2024 (533 animals total). The shelter returned 15 cats and 60 dogs to owners. For 2024 spay/neuter work, the shelter performed 69 full-price procedures and 289 under a grant-funded program that is now limited to Navajo County. Year-to-date 2025 totals reported were 23 full-price spay/neuters and 57 grant-funded procedures; the speaker noted the grant specifically limits eligibility to Navajo County residents.
Josh said the shelter is pursuing a generator for property resiliency and is in early planning stages to add a stray‑cat building and to remodel existing isolation space. He also announced an internal leadership transition: Josh said he will move on from his position and that Debbie Neff (Debbie) will take over as executive director when the transition occurs; no firm date was set.
Councilors thanked the Humane Society for its work and asked staff to pass along community appreciation. Josh said the shelter will continue to report updates to the council.
