Capital projects update: pool decks, Beardsley Park fence, sport‑court resurfacing completed

Carl Wilhelm, capital projects manager, and Russ Boston, facilities maintenance manager, reviewed major improvement projects completed or underway across Sun City West recreation properties.
Wilhelm said crews installed two new rubber pool decks and new interior wainscoting at Palm Ridge and completed a patio expansion at the Desert Trails pro shop. He noted RH Johnson’s rubber deck required replacement after a prior contractor’s chemical mix failed; the contractor returned and replaced the deck at no additional cost to the district.
Wilhelm said Beardsley Park received a permanent perimeter fence and additional gates and walkways to reduce the repeated labor required for temporary fencing during events. He said asphalt seal-and-striping work was completed at Beardsley, Grandview and Trail Ridge as part of routine parking-lot maintenance.
Russ Boston described several maintenance accomplishments: repainting Palm Ridge after woodpecker damage, repairing a damaged diving-step at Beardsley pool, replacing a 40-year-old HVAC unit at RH Johnson tennis building, and reconfiguring the RH Johnson pool backwash system and filter media to resolve recurring water clarity problems. Boston said the RH Johnson backwash system had been channeling and staff replaced the filter media and changed maintenance intervals to prevent recurrence.
Wilhelm said sport-court resurfacing included tennis and pickleball courts at RH Johnson and Palm Ridge, and that the district will continue scheduled court and parking-lot maintenance.
