Sun City West authorizes $111,201 for emergency Echo Mesa well pump repairs

At the Feb. 14 workshop the board reviewed a facts-and-findings packet and approved emergency repairs to the Echo Mesa Well pump.

Todd Patty (operations) told directors the well has been offline since mid-November and the community has been receiving water from the Deer Valley well. A Weber Water Resources inspection found a worn-through power cable that had shorted because of pump vibration; video also showed three holes in the well casing and 13 corroded sections of 8-inch column pipe that should be replaced. Staff recommended installing a protective sleeve (PVC schedule 40) for the power cable and said adding a variable frequency drive (VFD) motor could extend pump life and reduce energy costs.

The board authorized $111,201 for the emergency repair, to be paid from the FY24-25 allowance fund. The item was presented as an emergency repair scope and the board approved it by consensus.

Board members voted by consensus to move forward. Directors recorded answering in the affirmative when the president asked for consensus: Director Hurley, Director Pyszkowski (Paja?kowski/Piaoskowski spelling in packet), Director Chatham, Director Novello, Director Grom and Director Horvath (others were excused or absent); the board subsequently directed staff to proceed with the repairs under the allowance fund authorization.

Staff will contract with the vendor to perform the work and return any contract documentation as required by procurement policy.
