Committee reviews summer closure and irrigation projects for seven courses

Environmental services outlined planned summer closures and capital work at Echo Mesa, Trail Ridge, Pebblebrook, Grandview, Deer Valley and Desert Trails; Echo Mesa will close in April for an irrigation turf-reduction project and Trail Ridge is scheduled to close June 2 for drainage and irrigation head leveling.
Sun City West environmental services staff laid out a schedule of summer closures and course projects intended to address irrigation, drainage, bunker and turf issues across the association’s seven courses.
Todd Patty said Echo Mesa will be closed in April for a major irrigation turf-reduction project; during that closure staff will also level tees (Nos. 8, 12 and 16), increase aerification (especially on rough areas) and repair bunkers. Trail Ridge is scheduled to close Monday, June 2; planned work there includes installing fairway drainage, adding granite in desert areas, repairing bunker edges on holes 7, 8 and 12, adding sand to some fairway bunkers and raising and leveling irrigation heads that have settled several inches.
Patty said Pebblebrook will receive bunker-edge repairs, tree removal and irrigation head work and noted an intensified weed-control effort on Stardust greens to address Poa infestation. Grandview will receive topdressing in low areas, continued tree replacement and drainage work along car paths related to last year’s irrigation project settlements. Deer Valley will get dry wells along car paths and fairway drainage at hole 18; Desert Trails work focuses on drip irrigation repairs, plant replacement and installing split-rail fences at several road crossings.
Patty said Stardust can reuse irrigation overhead units removed from Echo Mesa, which will save money in the irrigation account, and that staff will provide pictures and progress updates to the committee as projects proceed. No formal action or vote occurred; staff said course reopenings are targeted after overseeding (staff noted courses scheduled to reopen Oct. 21 after overseeding).
