Club representatives told the commission during public comment on Aug. 4 that Flagler RC Racers have operated events at temporary parking-lot locations for three years and seek a permanent facility in a county park, ideally a 120‑by‑60‑foot paved slab plus adjacent grass for pit work. Chris Crowder, who identified himself as an organizer with state and national experience in radio‑controlled car racing, said a privately funded asphalt pad would cost about $25,000 and a permanent site would let the group host larger regional and national events that bring hotel nights and spending to the county. Crowder also said the club provides STEM outreach and conducts a Toys for Tots drive.
Commissioners and staff discussed potential parks sites, construction costs, private‑public partnership options and tourism involvement. County staff noted permanent facilities require planning, budget and possibly grant support; a staff member said an empty parking lot could be used on weekends but would not provide a permanent home. Several longtime local racers described the hobby’s benefits for older adults and youth engagement.
County staff later relayed an offer from Sheriff Staley, who had to leave the meeting, that the club could potentially use the sheriff’s driving/course area at the state guard project near the jail once construction is complete. Staff said that area is likely two years from completion but would provide a large, unobstructed asphalt area suitable for events and training in the interim. Commissioners encouraged the club to work with staff on interim options while exploring a permanent site through the parks planning and budget process.
