Commission adds immunization protections to 2026 state legislative agenda

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners voted to add language to its 2026 state legislative program urging opposition to any state-law changes that would remove or reduce statutorily required student immunizations, and to support legislation that would codify immunizations currently required by Department of Health rule.
Commissioner Nan Rich moved the amendment and it was seconded. Rich told the board the change was meant to allow the county's lobbyists to press the Legislature and the governor for protections for school immunizations. She listed the vaccines currently in statute and asked the county to oppose efforts to remove them and to support placing additional vaccines into statute where they are now only required by rule.
The proposal prompted a short procedural debate. One commissioner said they did not want to "oppose" items in a way that might affect the county's relations in Tallahassee and urged a softer advocacy frame; Rich said she would not weaken the amendment and stressed public-health stakes: "People die. Right. Children die," Rich said, arguing the county should take a clear position.
The amendment was adopted by the board.

The board also approved a separate technical amendment clarifying multimodal funding priorities for regional transportation projects, and the full legislative package (inclusive of both amendments) passed on a subsequent vote.
