Preservation Commission staff reported that the 2025 cultural heritage awards nomination period produced 10 submissions, up from seven or eight the prior year. Staff said they had extended the nomination deadline to accommodate nominees and were in the process of finalizing a jury: three jurors had accepted, one declined and one response was pending.
Staff explained the jury will be external to Evanston for objectivity, will conduct site visits and interviews with nominees as needed, and will make award selections that will be followed by a city council acknowledgement and a reception similar to the previous year, likely in October. The nominations cover a range of categories including cultural‑ambassador (lifetime contribution), design/preservation projects, public art and archival/documentation initiatives. Staff offered to share the full nomination package with commissioners and invited interested commissioners to tag along on site visits.
No formal commission vote was required; this agenda item was an informational update and staff said they will return with award decisions and scheduling once the jury meets.
