Township assessor outlines 30-day county board review window for assessment appeals

Mr. Sesser, the township assessor, told trustees on Aug. 25 that the office is preparing property assessments for submission to the county and that the submission will open a 30-day period during which property owners may file complaints with the county board of review.
"This is only for the assessments. We're not doing the taxes," Mr. Sesser said, emphasizing the distinction between assessed value and tax liability. He said the complaint to the board of review is an informal process and that staff in the township office or the county office will help residents complete the paperwork. The assessor reported the office is already receiving calls from residents concerned about higher taxes and wanted trustees to know the board-of-review process is the appropriate avenue for challenging assessed values.
Trustees did not take further action during the meeting; the assessor—s report served as an informational update on assessment timelines and available assistance for residents.
