Berwyn begins multi‑year ADA transition planning for sidewalks, ramps and bus stops

City of Berwyn officials opened a public presentation on a draft Americans with Disabilities Act transition plan for sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks, bus stops and pedestrian signals, telling the City Council the work will be long term and driven by community input. Nicole Campbell, senior engineer for the city, introduced the project and asked council members to help publicize a forthcoming public comment period.
The plan was prepared with technical assistance from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) and consulting firm Oates Associates. Victoria Barrett, project manager at CMAP, said the plan is intended as “a long term plan for progress” and stressed that bringing the public right‑of‑way into federal compliance will take years. Barrett added that CMAP’s Accessible Communities Program was created because “only 11% of communities in our region were compliant” when the program began.
