Jeff Anderson explained the city contracted with its partner Scientel for firewall services and that Scientel paid the June invoice when the renewal was due; the city will reimburse Scientel. Anderson described the work as the second optional year of a multi-year network redesign that consolidated separate department networks into a single, citywide network. He said the redesign reduced the number of firewalls and lowered recurring fees compared with earlier configurations.
Council members asked for time to review the materials; one member said the packet arrived via email on Friday and requested the item be treated as information only at this meeting so members could review details before a vote. Anderson said last year’s additional fee was just under $110,000 and that the current year’s firewall fees are about $65,000, reflecting simplification and consolidation of the network appliances. Staff said the renewal will coincide with the end of the larger five-year contract in 2026, when council can consider longer-term options.
No formal action was requested or taken at the Aug. 25 meeting; staff indicated they will present the item again through the normal accounts/consent process if council members request a vote.
