Committee confirms six appointments to Aurora Youth Council

Aurora — The Rules, Administration and Procedure Committee approved six appointments to the Aurora Youth Council on Aug. 19 to replace graduating seniors and fill seats representing area high schools.
Why it matters: The Aurora Youth Council is a city youth-advisory group that gives high-school students experience in local government; filling vacancies preserves the council’s role in outreach and youth programming.
Simon Rodriguez, youth services manager and staff liaison for the Aurora Youth Council, told the committee the city had a record nine seniors graduate last year and that the six new appointees will fill those positions. Rodriguez named the appointees and their schools: Ricardo Herrera and Alex Veil, East Aurora High School; Amy Flores, West Aurora High School; Azvi Chokshi, Metea Valley High School; Alex Feinberg, Marmion Academy; and Ava DeWigg, at-large (Kaineland High School). Rodriguez said three school-based seats remain vacant for Rosary Academy, Aurora Christian and Batavia and that staff continues outreach.
The committee approved the appointments by voice vote. Rodriguez said students may apply at any time and that staff will hold applications until vacancies open.
Ending: The newly appointed students will join the Aurora Youth Council for the coming school year; staff encouraged aldermen to help recruit candidates from their wards and school contacts.
