Council approves access improvements at 1110 Aurora Avenue to ease steep driveway access

The City Council on Aug. 25 approved a $253,230 contract with Martam Construction Inc. for access improvements at 1110 Aurora Avenue, including a paved access road, electronic gate and site lighting to replace an existing, very steep driveway.
Engineering staff said the site sits between Aurora Avenue and the BNSF railroad and that the existing driveway to the lower level is too steep for typical delivery trucks. The project will use newly purchased property to the north to provide access off Indian Trail, add an electronic gate for remote opening, improve lighting and pave a new access road.
Engineering staff told the council only one bid was received; they attributed limited bidder response to the combination of required earthwork, season scheduling and recent property-purchase timing. Staff said the city is finalizing the acquisition of the adjacent property that enables use of the improved access from Indian Trail and recommended moving forward with the responsive bidder, Martam Construction Inc.
Alderman Bate moved approval and Alderman Jonathan Nunez seconded; the council approved the contract by voice vote.
Staff said the project had been part of a multi‑year CIP effort to provide safer truck access and to eliminate the need for repeated use of neighboring private property for deliveries.
