Committee approves $50,000-per-year matching grants for Third Ward homeowners

Aurora — The Rules Administration Procedure Committee voted 5-0 on Sept. 2 to approve a two-year resolution authorizing $50,000 per year in matching grant funds to help eligible homeowners in the city’s Third Ward obtain repairs and accessibility improvements.
The grant program, originally established in 2021, will operate as a dollar-for-dollar match with partner organizations Rebuilding Together Aurora, RTA, and the Neighbor Project to assist homeowners who meet eligibility criteria for the partners, including people 60 or older, military veterans, persons with disabilities, or single parents with children under 18.
Alderman Mesiakos, the Third Ward alderman who presented the item to the committee, said the program is intended to supplement work done by those nonprofit partners. “This program established in 2021 ... providing eligible homeowners in the Third Ward, including eligible ... individuals 60 years of age or older, military veterans, persons with disabilities, or single parents with children under 18 years of age who meet the established program criteria of RTA and the Neighbor Project to receive funding,” Mesiakos said. He added the City’s Ward grant fund has contributed “a little over $38,000” to the program over the past four years.
Alderman Burrows thanked Mesiakos for creating the program and said he used the same model to start a similar effort in Ward 1. The committee then moved to approve the resolution; the motion was made on the floor, seconded, and recorded as carried with a unanimous vote.
Official action recorded in the meeting minutes lists the motion to approve the resolution (25-0643), with a recorded second and a final vote of 5-0 in favor. The committee did not record any dissenting conditions or amendments to the resolution during the meeting.
