Wheeling unveils proposed flag redesign; public comment period announced

On Aug. 4, 2025 village officials presented a proposed redesign of the Village of Wheeling flag and said the design will be posted on the village website for about 30 days for public review ahead of a planned formal unveiling at the Oct. 6 meeting. President Horker said the process included more than 70 options and was informed by basic vexillology design principles (no writing, no more than three colors). The proposal keeps a stylized wheel motif and assigns meaning to individual spokes, similar to how Chicago's flag identifies elements with stars. Cook County Commissioner Scott Britton, who led Cook County's flag redesign efforts, was invited to assist with the Oct. 6 unveiling, and the historical society will receive a pristine copy of the current flag for display. Horker said the goal was to modernize the flag while making it recognizable at a glance and that all explanatory notes and images are available on the village website. No formal board adoption occurred at the Aug. 4 meeting; staff said the redesign will return for formal adoption at the first October meeting after the public comment period.
