Interdisciplinary Institute launches STEAM-plus-arts teen program; performance and stipend set for Aug. 24 at the Orpheum

Dr. Joy Yang, founding director of the Interdisciplinary Institute and Joy Yang Productions, described a summer teen program that combines science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) with music and movement. The program targets mainly 12-to-18-year-olds with a preference for 16-to-18-year-olds and will culminate in a performance at the Orpheum Theatre on Aug. 24.
Yang said the workshops will run on four Sundays and that participating teenagers can enroll in five different learning tracks, receive one-on-one coaching, and earn a stipend for participation and the final concert. She described the institute’s mission as “to present, educate, conduct, and promote STEM plus arts research” and said the program emphasizes collaboration, openness, communication and empathy to build humanistic skills alongside technical ones.
The program will include collaborators from local universities and community members working across disciplines; Yang said mentorship and exposure are priorities and that the institute will focus on raising the voices of historically underrepresented groups including BIPOC and LGBTQ participants.
Coalition members were shown program flyers and a QR code for sign-ups; Yang asked coalition members to help spread the word to potential teen participants. No formal school-district or municipal funding commitments were announced at the coalition meeting.
