Resident proposes reopening housing authority space as soup kitchen to serve people experiencing homelessness

During citizens participation, Alex Meske, who identified themself as a member of the citys affordable housing board and a regional housing liaison, told the council that at least 30 Kirksville-born residents and another fluctuating 10—2 from surrounding counties are currently experiencing homelessness and needing services. Meske said the population seeking services relies on job training, hygiene access, transportation, medical and mental health treatment, shelter and food. They said they are working with Housing Authority staff and other community organizations to reopen the former senior services center at the Housing Authority building as a soup kitchen offering free meals, prioritizing community members without immediate food access. Meske said they were still assembling funding and partner networks and invited council members and others to speak after the meeting if interested in supporting or learning more. No formal council action was taken; the presentation was in the public-comment portion of the meeting.
