Urbana Human Rights Commission reports no open complaints, refers eviction case to housing authority and lists free community events

At its Aug. 19 meeting the City of Urbana Human Rights Commission's officer reported there were no open formal complaints and described recent intake activity, a referral for an eviction case, and upcoming public events the commission encouraged members to attend.
Carla (staff member) said an office caller who faced eviction lived in subsidized housing and was referred to the Housing Authority of Champaign County because the commission does not have jurisdiction over subsidized housing. Carla summarized: "A caller contacted the office because they were being evicted from their home. The caller lived in subsidized housing. We do not have jurisdiction, over the subsidized housing, and I referred them to the housing authority of, Champaign County." She also said staff received a phone message from a case manager asking about rental deposits for a client; staff returned the call and neither the case manager nor the client had followed up as of the meeting.
Carla highlighted two free community events: the third annual Black Mental Health and Wellness Conference on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Parkland College (registration link emailed to commissioners) and the "2025 Illinois Together Against Hate Conference" on Oct. 21 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the I Hotel in Champaign. She said the Illinois Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes, in partnership with the cities of Champaign and Urbana and the Illinois Department of Human Rights, is hosting the Oct. 21 event and that both events are free and include content for human rights commissions.
Carla also noted the commission currently has three openings and reminded members the next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 5:30 p.m. She encouraged commissioners to sign up for the events and said staff had emailed registration links.
No formal complaints or investigations were reported as open during the meeting. The referral to the Housing Authority of Champaign County was an administrative intake action undertaken because the commission lacks jurisdiction over subsidized housing matters.
