Regional Planning Commission staff announced competitive grant wins that will shape early childhood services in Champaign County.
Brandon, speaking for the early childhood division, said RPC was officially re‑awarded Head Start and Early Head Start services for Champaign County in July 2025. The five‑year grant period cited at the meeting runs from Aug. 1, 2025, through July 30, 2030. Brandon reported annual funding levels “roughly a little over $6,000,000” for Head Start and Early Head Start and a training and technical assistance allocation of $86,585.
Staff also announced awards from the Illinois State Board of Education: combined Preschool for All and Preschool for All expansion grants totaling $1,278,107. RPC said the funds will support certified preschool teachers, a professional development coach, and a family and community engagement coordinator and will help the program maintain a second teacher in classrooms.
Additionally, staff noted a $7,800 award from the Women United Affinity Group of United Way of Champaign County to promote early language and reading development through books and materials for families.
Staff emphasized workforce challenges — vacancies and higher turnover — but said the grants support service continuity and professional development. Commissioners were told memorandums of understanding with Parkland College, Danville Area Community College and the Vermilion County Housing Authority are forthcoming for presentation at a future meeting.
