The Health and Safety committee on Jan. 9 voted to authorize staff to apply for the Missouri Department of Conservation managed deer hunt for 2025, an arrangement the city has used in prior years. The motion passed with one no vote.
Staff said the program would be conducted in the same manner as previous hunts, and that the Department of Conservation manages permits and harvest limits. Alderman Jokers moved to apply; Alderman Wissbrock seconded. During discussion Alderman Brightshaft requested harvest numbers from the most recent season to assess whether another managed hunt is required; staff said they would attempt to obtain numbers but that the Department had been slow to provide them in January historically.
The roll call showed one opposing vote. The committee also discussed whether, if harvests had been high in the prior season, a further hunt would still be appropriate; staff noted the Missouri Department of Conservation controls harvest quotas and could adjust future allocations.
