A park board member asked the Board of Aldermen on July 7 for permission to use social media to solicit muralists to design an exterior mural for the rink at T. Meyer Park.
The board member said an initial concept from a muralist was attractive but expensive; the park board would like to cast a wider net to find alternatives. The proposed mural would be painted on the outside front wall of the rink and depict the sports and activities at the park, with high-school mascots represented at the ends to reflect the community.
Park board members discussed materials and sealants recommended by muralists to reduce vandalism and maintenance needs. The park board said any shortlisted artists would present designs to the park board and then the aldermen for final approval. An alderman responded, “Sounds great,” indicating support for the solicitation.
Why it matters: The mural project aims to enhance a public amenity, involves public art procurement and will require subsequent approvals for a final design and maintenance plan.
What’s next: Park board will solicit artists via social media, review proposals in a future park-board meeting and return recommended designs to the aldermen for final approval and funding decisions.
