County staff explained the tax mailer format has changed at the state level and that the figures published represent the proposed budget in a worst-case form before work sessions reduce requested increases. A county staff member said the county had just received a letter stating it is again in compliance with state appraisal requirements; staff confirmed that to reach compliance county valuations rose substantially and that the notice readers interpreted the high figures as final bills.
Commissioners discussed that other elected officials who request budget increases should be prepared to attend the public hearing to explain their requests. Commissioners said lowering published figures is possible after the required public notice is posted but before a formal budget adoption hearings concludes.
