Crawford County commissioners on the record scheduled a public budget hearing for 10 a.m. on Aug. 22, 2025, after several commissioners reported receiving phone calls from residents concerned about proposed tax increases and the county's mailer format.
Commissioner Carl said he received numerous calls over the weekend from residents who were upset about apparent increases in county taxes and questioned why the list of delinquent taxes and other notices were not better publicized. He warned the commission to expect a "packed house" at the hearing.
County staff explained the tax mailer format has changed at the state level and that the figures published represent the proposed budget in a worst-case form before work sessions reduce requested increases. A county staff member said the county had just received a letter stating it is again in compliance with state appraisal requirements; staff confirmed that to reach compliance county valuations rose substantially and that the notice readers interpreted the high figures as final bills.
Commissioners discussed that other elected officials who request budget increases should be prepared to attend the public hearing to explain their requests. Commissioners said lowering published figures is possible after the required public notice is posted but before a formal budget adoption hearings concludes.
Why it matters: Published proposed budget figures influence public perception of how much taxes could rise; the hearing provides a formal forum for residents and elected officials to debate and explain budget requests.
Next steps: The commission set the budget hearing date and encouraged departments and elected officials seeking increases to be present to explain their requests to attendees.
