Potter County commissioners approved a budget amendment to move contingency funds into the Tax Office's salaries and benefits to cover a temporary additional staff position.
Why it matters: Tax Office management said the office was understaffed and needs a temporary hire to maintain operations and to train existing staff, especially as an employee will be on maternity leave within weeks.
Jake Collier, who identified himself as the Tax Office administrative manager, told the court the office has 21 full'time employees and is "understaffed." He said the requested temporary position would cost about $20,000 for the remainder of the fiscal year and would help train other employees and cover essential responsibilities while staff are shifted during the maternity leave.
County Auditor Wes (presenting the budget amendments) said there were sufficient funds in contingency for the remainder of the fiscal year and that the long'term permanence of the position could be considered in the upcoming budget process. Multiple commissioners urged the Tax Office to bring the position request through the formal budget process for the next fiscal year; Collier said the office plans to request the permanent position at budget time if the temporary hire proves necessary.
The court approved the budget amendments (including the Tax Office transfer) on a voice vote, 5''to''0'00.
