The Public Safety Committee approved a budget amendment to accept a $19,000 grant from the state attorney general's office for an organized retail crime initiative and to contract with Utilitra to install three 360‑degree cameras along the high‑retail corridor on West Highway 50. Chief (presenter) told the committee the grant targets thefts in areas serving Home Depot, Sam's Club and Walmart and that the city would make a one‑time budget transfer of $19,800 from general fund reserves to cover the project; the grant will cover $19,000 and the city would pay approximately $800.
"We had applied for, this year a grant with the attorney general's office for the organized retail crime initiative ... So, we received the grant for $19,000," the presenter said. The project is contingent on an executed bid with Utilitra to site cameras at Auto Court, Long Drive and Dean Drive to capture video across intersections the presenter described as busy with retail activity.
Committee members asked whether the grant is paid upfront; the presenter replied the city will receive the money directly from the grant program. A committee member who has observed the utility of similar cameras in other jurisdictions fully supported the purchase, saying they had helped close cases.
A motion to approve the budget amendment and contract authorization passed in committee by unanimous roll call (Blackburn: yes; Ford: yes; Stouffel: yes; Newcomb: yes). The item will move to the full council for final action.
