The City Council on June 2 approved an ordinance implementing a municipal grocery retailer’s occupation tax and a municipal grocery service occupation tax to replace a state-level levy that had been eliminated.
Alderman Evans moved to adopt the ordinance and Alderman Coleman seconded. Chief of staff told council the local tax is a replacement after the change ordered by Governor Pritzker and estimated the impact to the city at about $105,000 per year.
During roll call, each alderman voted in favor and the mayor declared the motion carried. No amendments or conditions were recorded in the meeting minutes.
The ordinance was passed as presented and will be implemented in accordance with the city’s municipal tax procedures; staff did not provide the effective date in the committee discussion and said details had been covered in committee earlier.
