North Chicago to revise video-gaming rules after yearlong moratorium; committee seeks aldermanic input

The Judiciary Committee on June 2 heard an update on work to rewrite North Chicago’s code for video gaming after the council imposed a yearlong moratorium to study economic and social impacts.
Chief of staff told the committee the moratorium allowed staff to analyze gaming terminals, economic impacts and social effects and that code changes will be broad, covering gaming terminals, sign code and related regulations. “It’s not just the gaming terminals, but it’s the sign code,” the chief of staff said.
Staff told the committee it will need “a couple more weeks” to prepare ordinance amendments and expects to return to committee around June 19 for detailed review. The mayor and committee members were invited to provide feedback on whether proposed restrictions are “too much” or “too little.”
No ordinance vote occurred on June 2. Staff emphasized the changes will come back to committee for input and potential modification before any final council action.
