The Sedalia Police Department on July 21 told the city council it will apply for a 2026 Missouri Blue Shield grant to help replace aging camera equipment and reported acceptance of a Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) award to fund a school‑zone blinker sign.
Police staff said the camera replacement project has an estimated total cost of about $75,630 and that the department expects a minimum Blue Shield award of $50,000 if awarded. The council adopted a resolution authorizing the department to submit the Blue Shield application (Resolution 21‑37).
In a separate, awarded SHSP safety grant, staff presented plans to install a Tapco school‑zone blinking sign with solar power and radar speed feedback for eastbound traffic on Third Street near Vermont Avenue for the Sacred Heart school zone. The department said the equipment cost is roughly $8,759.01 and that the SHSP award will reimburse approximately $8,700; staff recommended a small budget amendment to accept and expend the grant funds. The council adopted Resolution 21‑38 and passed related budget ordinances authorizing acceptance and purchase.
Chief Fuller explained the school‑zone unit will display flashing school‑zone lights, the 15 mph limit and an active radar readout showing drivers’ speeds as they approach the school zone. Corporal Sylvia and other officers will continue to pursue additional locations for similar treatments as future grant opportunities arise.
Council members heard that purchase and delivery would occur in 2026 and that staff will return with any necessary budget amendments once awards and amounts are finalized.
