The Webster Architecture Review Board on Wednesday approved revised construction plans for 814 Edgar Road, contingent on specific revisions to the carport trim and additional small windows in pantry spaces.
Board members said the changes were intended to bring the new carport and porch details into better visual alignment with the front porch and to break up a long, plain east wall. The board approved the resubmittal after discussing siding and trim details.
During review, board members asked that the area where vertical siding was shown at the carport perimeter be finished with a smooth horizontal trim that reads like a box beam, rather than exposed vertical siding. Members also asked that the carport columns receive the same cap-and-base trim treatment used on the front porch columns so the carport does not appear utilitarian next to the more detailed porch.
Board members additionally recommended adding small windows into the pantries on the east elevation “to give some natural light”—a change the applicant agreed to incorporate. The board specified the trim board at the carport/porch transition should be constructed as a smooth finish board and read into the approval.
Formal action: the board approved 814 Edgar Road with the conditions that (1) the perimeter shown with vertical siding at the carport be replaced with a smooth, boxed trim similar to the front porch beam; (2) carport columns be trimmed to match the front porch columns; and (3) small windows be added into the pantries on the east elevation. The motion passed unanimously.
Applicants were told to include these revisions in the permit drawings submitted to the city so building-permit reviewers will have the revised details on file.
Less critical details discussed included options to add a trellis or climbing plants at the carport and whether the added trim should be field-standard sizes; the board settled on a typical trim approach and asked the applicant to resolve specific dimensions in permit drawings.
