Big Bend sidewalk requests are county projects; resurfacing and bridge work scheduled in 2026–27

At the August meeting the commission learned that requests for sidewalks and crosswalks on Big Bend Road fall under Saint Louis County jurisdiction, not the city of Webster Groves.
Staff told the commission that any sidewalk or curb work “on Big Bend, including sidewalks, would be Saint Louis County.” Commissioners were advised to direct residents who request sidewalks on Big Bend to the county’s request process and contact county staff. Staff said the county has resurfacing projects with anticipated construction stretches: Lockwood to Seckman/Cleese Station Road in 2026 and the stretch from the 44 overpass to Elm in 2027; the latter project includes new sidewalks and ADA improvements.
Commissioners noted the county’s project plans include more-visible continental-style crosswalks on Big Bend approaches and possible bump-outs and discussed how the planned MoDOT reconstruction of the bridge over I-44 could create an opportunity to improve sidewalks and bike buffers. Clark and other commissioners recommended residents contact County Councilwoman Lisa Clancy’s office (staff assistant Craig was named as a helpful contact) for follow-up and to request specific striping or crosswalk treatments.
Staff said the city has previously raised Big Bend safety at council and that the county’s director of transportation has been briefed on the corridor. No formal city-led sidewalk construction on Big Bend is planned because the county controls those projects; the commission encouraged residents to pursue county channels and to coordinate any city requests with county staff as the resurfacing projects move toward construction.
