City schedules Safe Streets open house and walking audit with consultants for Sept. 10

City staff said the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) consultants will be in town the week of Sept. 10 and the project team will host a public open house at the recreation center on Sept. 10 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The meeting will include TrailNet and the project consultants, who staff said will present roadway safety measures and collect community input on pedestrian and bicycle safety. A staff member said a walking safety audit of a portion of the high-injury network is scheduled for Sept. 10 as a non-public technical session with consultants, planning, public works, police and other technical stakeholders. A focused community meeting for the North Webster neighborhood is scheduled for Sept. 11 at Webster Rock Hill Ministries and will be open to the public, though space may be tight. The open house and the focused meeting follow public outreach that TrailNet previously conducted with the traffic advisory commission; staff said TrailNet used large illustrated boards that will be available again. On whether the grant’s environmental review will be finished before local meetings, a staff member said, “the environmental review should be completed by by the September. So, yes, I am hopeful that that will happen, but, I'm not 100% certain that it will. So we were discussing coming back in October.” Discussion only: commissioners and staff discussed outreach plans, logistics and the focus on engaging residents about cycling, pedestrian mobility and roadway safety. No formal policy change or funding decision was made at this meeting. Direction: staff said they will circulate updates to the task force and make the schedule and outreach materials available to commissioners ahead of the public open house. Ending: residents and stakeholders who want to review materials or attend were asked to mark calendars for Sept. 10 (open house) and Sept. 11 (North Webster focus group); staff will notify the task force by e-mail with updates on the environmental review and next steps.
