Commission reviews Safe Streets for All activity, community-liaison hiring and feedback from rec-center event

Commissioners at the August meeting updated residents on the city’s Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant work, including interviews for a community-liaison position tied to the grant and recent outreach events.
“Webster Groves has a department, Safe Streets for All, which was a federal grant,” Commissioner Eric Tobin told visitors, explaining that the city is running demonstration projects and staffing to support outreach and implementation. Tobin said the commission is “currently interviewing candidates for the community liaison position” and hoped to fill the role “within the next week or two.”
Commissioners reviewed a July event at the recreation center that drew stronger turnout than expected. Members said attendees appreciated the presentation but urged TrailNet and other presenters to include more basic introductory material and more interactive activities so residents can identify routes and multimodal connections in the city. Commissioner Carrie and others proposed a subcommittee meeting with TrailNet to refine materials and insist on more hands-on exercises before future events.
Chair Clark said the commission’s role is supportive and emphasized coordination with the pending comprehensive plan and SS4A: the goal is to leverage demonstration projects and community education so the city can move from pilot tests to implementation. Commissioners suggested dusting off past materials from 2014 for low-cost, quick wins where useful, while also coordinating with the comprehensive plan’s implementation priorities.
No formal vote was taken on programming. The commission agreed to ask TrailNet to meet with the commission’s education subcommittee, to refine outreach materials, and to promote a mixture of short-term activities and longer-term demonstration projects.
