New bookstore owner Betty Bear introduces Betty's Books to Crossroads, community suggests 'book-passing' event

Betty Bear introduced herself to the Crossroads Business District as the new owner of Betty's Books and said she and her husband bought the building at 8772 Big Bend about a year and a half ago. “We are currently located over, in the DeSoto Building... we purchased the building there at 8772 Big Bend,” she said.
Betty told the commission that opening had been planned for August but was looking more like September as renovation work continued. “It was the August, but now it's looking like could be the September,” she said.
A neighbor suggested doing a community moving event modeled on a book-passing idea used when Webster University moved its library; the neighbor said the distance made it “a little bit far” (about a mile) but that people were excited by the concept.
Commissioners discussed parking and potential tenant impacts. One commissioner warned that employees or patrons might park on other private lots and said they would tow cars or pursue special use permits if parking became an issue.
Betty said she had shared her phone number around the neighborhood and invited business owners to call or text if issues arise. She also said the storefront windows are being installed and that she would check on a window left open at night after storm forecasts.
No formal actions were taken; the segment was an introduction and community conversation about the new shop’s opening and neighborhood coordination.
