Green Space Commission pursues volunteer coordinator idea, explores Deer Creek partnership for sign-ups

A commissioner said work from the previous year had researched grants to fund a volunteer coordinator; that person would help onboard volunteers, coordinate invasive-species removal and replanting projects, and reduce workload on staff and commission leaders.
Commissioners reported that the city had previously moved volunteer sign-ups to the city’s CivicRec system, which created extra steps for volunteers. Several members said Deer Creek Watershed Alliance — which the commission used previously — can push volunteer notices to a larger audience and supports easy sign-up and rain-date notifications.
Commissioners described ongoing conversations with Deer Creek Watershed Alliance; the alliance would do due diligence to confirm staff capacity and, if agreeable, could host event sign-up pages and volunteer blasts. Commissioners said moving sign-up back to Deer Creek would likely increase turnout and reduce the administrative load on city staff.
No formal agreement was executed at the meeting. Commissioners said they will continue the conversation with Deer Creek and city staff and will present information to council for approval if needed.
