City pause on pocket prairie program leaves Green Space Commission ready to help with outreach

Commissioners said the city’s pocket prairie pilot and related turf-conversion work are on pause while city staff — including the city manager and park officials — regroup to clarify next steps and public communications.

Members told the meeting they had received neighborhood concern and media attention about the program’s rollout. Commissioners said the rollout had been “botched” from a public-communications perspective and that education and outreach would ideally have preceded field activity. A member who had followed the story said the second spraying for the program was scheduled for July and that clarity was needed before that activity proceeded.

Commissioners repeatedly offered to help with education and neighbor outreach if the parks department, city manager’s office or public relations staff requested it. Several members noted they would want to understand specifics — including materials and methods to be used — before endorsing or actively supporting elements of the program.

Members also suggested the local news outlet produce a follow-up article with technical information about what products were used and a parks-department perspective. The commission discussed the need for better coordination between the city’s communications staff and the commissions when projects affect private-property neighbors.

No policy change or formal action to resume or cancel the pocket prairie program was recorded during the meeting. Commissioners said they expect further direction from city staff and offered to assist with neighbor outreach if staff determine a role for the commission.
