Webster Groves police told the meeting the department recently had two retirements and is actively recruiting; the chief said staffing dipped to 43 officers and the department has tentatively offered one candidate pending a psychological exam as it works "to get to 40." Promotions are delayed because several promotion processes are interdependent.
The chief and staff recapped a recent community impact event the department organized. The chief estimated about 20 independent citizens attended and “maybe had 40 to 45 people in there” when staff and partner organizations were counted. Participants asked typical neighborhood questions about traffic, dogs and other local concerns, and department staff said the event created tangible outcomes and leadership opportunities for officers who presented.
Council members and staff said the event went well but that publicity timing limited turnout; one official said save-the-date timing and announcements likely cut into attendance. Officials said they plan to do post-event reviews and adjust timing and outreach for future events; one council member urged using surveys to target topics for future sessions.
Police listed upcoming uses for their bicycle team and special events staffing: the team will support smaller events, the All American 5K and will be more visible at the city parade and carnival. Officials also discussed planning for Fourth of July and Jazz Fest.
National Night Out is scheduled for Aug. 5 from about 5 to 8 p.m.; staff asked for volunteers to staff a table and said they will circulate an email seeking help. The department will provide giveaways and QR-code handouts at outreach events.
No formal policy changes were made; staff said they will continue recruitment and training and will adjust community-event outreach timing and promotion based on lessons learned.
