Harvey County approves $100,000 purchase of building near courthouse to aid courthouse remodel

Harvey County commissioners on Aug. 26 approved a $100,000 purchase agreement for property at 109 Seventh Street, a building immediately south of the courthouse, as the county plans a courthouse remodel and potential departmental relocations.
County staff said the property, owned by Greg Niether, includes an office building and additional parking that could be used during transitional construction and as a permanent location for a county department. County officials and the architect reviewing the courthouse remodel told the commission the purchase could reduce costs because it would limit the need to relocate or extensively rebuild interior walls inside the courthouse.
The approved agreement covers the purchase price and excludes certain items the seller intends to remove, such as bookcases the seller’s family wishes to retain. Commissioners asked for and received assurances that any furniture left behind could be itemized as abandoned and either removed by the seller or incorporated into the sale by written addendum.
Staff and commissioners noted minor clerical corrections to the contract language (for example, 'termite' inspection typographical correction and spelling), and the commission approved the purchase subject to final staff review and those corrections. The county administrator said roof and HVAC items needing repair were factored into the offer.
Commissioners also discussed closing logistics and noted the property includes parking that could reduce courthouse congestion for people paying bills or reporting for jury service. The board voted to approve the agreement and will schedule final closing steps with staff.
