County staff brief commissioners on insurance renewals ahead of October open enrollment

County staff told commissioners on Sept. 9 that insurer responses are arriving for the county’s employee benefits renewal and that open-enrollment materials must be finalized soon to meet outreach dates.
Cindy, a county staff member who presented the benefits update, said she had received Delta Dental’s renewal and confirmation that Blue Cross had prepared its proposal. She reported a Delta Dental increase “about an 8.25 to 8.26 increase across the categories” and said the county has split premium increases 50/50 with employees in recent years; staff will present options and final rates as soon as the carriers and broker complete their work.
Why it matters: commissioners must approve benefit plan renewals and any county premium contributions before open enrollment and the health fair so employees receive accurate plan summaries and pamphlets.
Staff emphasized time pressure: the county’s health fair was scheduled for Oct. 24 and open enrollment was discussed for the last week of October; presenters asked for a prompt review so pamphlets, system set-up and communications can be completed. Cindy said she expects the benefits consultant (IMA) to attend the next meeting to present formal options and recommended contribution splits.
Staff also noted other personnel work: the county’s current wage-study contract runs through February 2027, and the presenter said she will attend the Kansas State SHRM Conference for professional development next week.
No formal approvals of benefit renewals were made at the Sept. 9 meeting; staff will return with full renewal packages and recommended action for the commission to approve before open enrollment.
