Nye County Sheriff Joe McGill and Animal Services Manager Christie Sigmond told the county commission Aug. 5 that law enforcement arrested an individual at a property known as Dragon Rescue and charged the person with multiple misdemeanor counts related to animal neglect. The county is providing court‑ordered care for animals seized from the site.
McGill said the arrest was last Thursday and the suspect faces 19 misdemeanor counts for animal abuse or neglect. “There were a total of 102 animals on the property,” the sheriff said at the meeting, and the county took three dogs to the shelter for additional treatment. He said the court ordered the owner prohibited from feeding, watering and caring for the animals and that the county is pursuing restitution through the courts if the owner cannot pay for care.
Sigmond, the county animal‑services manager, described operational impacts and a need for volunteer support to carry out feeding and maintenance tasks across the property. She said volunteers are assisting and that Title 6 updates to the county code are under way to strengthen animal‑welfare protections. Sigmond also announced the shelter’s month‑long Clear the Shelter adoption drive: all adoptions in August are $20; the shelter currently has more than 70 dogs available for adoption and more than 100 animals in its care.
Officials asked the public to donate hay and other supplies for animals, and McGill said the county will seek restitution in court to cover care costs if owners cannot pay. McGill thanked volunteers and the DA’s office for assistance on the case and urged continued community support for the shelter.
Ending: County officials said they will continue feeding and caring for animals under court order while pursuing prosecution and restitution; the shelter is promoting low‑fee adoptions in August to place animals in homes.
