Salina USD 305 board approves consent agenda including gifts, contracts and change orders

The Salina Public Schools Board of Education unanimously approved the meeting consent agenda on Aug. 12, authorizing several vendor encumbrances, accepting gifts and approving routine minutes and financial reports.
A board member moved to approve the consent agenda and the motion carried 7-0 after a second and brief acknowledgement. The consent items in the packet included minutes of prior regular and special meetings, the personnel report and financial reports (the July bills list, the June treasurer’s report and the June investment report).
The packet listed vendor encumbrances: $23,289.12 to New Directions (for the annual renewal of the employee assistance program), and $25,237 to Building Controls and Services for installation and configuration of the control system for the new boiler at Lakewood Middle School. The board also approved a $32,000 change order related to Salina Stadium construction to ATG Sports Construction, per the consent list.
Board members also approved several gifts: a $6,000 class gift acceptance from Salina Regional Health Center for Central High Meadows; a $10,000 gift from the Earl Bain Foundation for micro-scholarships for USD 305 students taking their first college class while in high school; a $20,000 pass-through fund gift from the Gustoff and Hannah Applequist fund at the Greater Salina Community Foundation to CKCIE; and a $30,000 gift from the Salina Education Foundation to support the Rising Educators program and recruitment strategies.
At the meeting the board president thanked staff for producing a four-page personnel report and welcomed new faculty in advance of the school year.
Why it matters: The approvals provide vendor commitments for services the district said are necessary before school starts, and the gifts are earmarked for scholarships and district programs that support students and teacher recruitment.
