Wheeler officials warn of budget shortfall, push volunteer recruitment and launch beautification and movie‑night events

Mayor Mary Lefferta told residents the city needs volunteers for a newly proposed funding committee, as well as parks and other standing committees, and encouraged people to submit volunteer applications before July so the work can begin in the coming fiscal year.
Adopt‑a‑Planter: the council approved an Adopt‑a‑Planter program to place hanging baskets and planters along Highway 101. Participants will commit to maintain adopted planters for the season; donated plaque recognition will be provided and a raffle (two billing cycles of waived water service) will be offered as a prize. The program includes procedures for removing abandoned planters (participant disqualified from raffle and required to remove the planter after notification).
Wheeler movie nights: council authorized two outdoor movie nights in August and September at Wheeler Upper Park as a parks‑fundraiser/community event. The plan calls for family‑friendly programming, small‑scale food concessions, and a modest admission charge to support parks and an emergency volunteer group; staff said they will finalize dates, permits and logistics and recruit volunteers to run the events.
Cleanup day and trail event: council promoted the town’s annual Wheeler Cleanup Day (coming Saturday) and a July 12 Saddleberry / Seminary Trail launch event that will include a ribbon or ceremonial tamper, short talks, guided tours and vendors; organizers said the trail event will include fundraising activities such as raffles and a brick‑sale to support future trail extension.
Next steps: staff will publish volunteer application information on the city website and in the newsletter and will return with logistics and final dates for the Adopt‑a‑Planter and movie events. Council emphasized a short timeline for forming the funding committee and urged residents to volunteer.
