Wheeler council presses for speed enforcement and grant funding after residents report frequent speeding on Highway 101

WHEELER, Ore. — Concerns about speeding along U.S. Highway 101 and Hemlock Street dominated an Aug. 19 council discussion on traffic safety, with residents and business owners saying oversized trucks and speeding vehicles are shaking buildings and endangering pedestrians.

Councilor Katie (packet contributor) and others described multiple instances of vehicles exceeding posted limits and asked staff to pursue short-term enforcement options and grant funding for speed‑abatement equipment. Councilors discussed asking the Tillamook County Sheriff to place a mobile radar trailer (the county “speed wagon”) for temporary enforcement and pursuing ODOT or other grants to purchase solar-powered radar signs and flashing crosswalk beacons.

The council identified Highway 101 crosswalks near the liquor store (Pine Street) and other locations as priorities for improved visibility and asked staff to compile prior grant-material contacts, coordinate with county sheriff and ODOT, and work with Kevin (local grant volunteer) on potential funding applications.
