NIXA, Mo. — The City Council on Monday approved a resolution permitting Nixa Public Schools to conduct brief consumer‑grade fireworks displays at home football games, subject to safety setbacks negotiated by staff and the school district.

Planning and development director Scott Gabbi told the council staff consulted the National Fire Protection Association guidance and state rules on public displays, the school district and the contractor. Because the new Apex training facility at the football complex has a flame‑retardant covering, staff and the district agreed on a 350‑foot setback from the Apex Center for the display site and a 300‑foot setback from an on‑site fuel storage (generator) area, the latter required by state regulation. Nixa Public Schools also required the pyrotechnic contractor to carry $3 million in liability insurance.

Councilmember Shawn Lucas moved to approve the resolution; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Kelly Morris and passed unanimously.

Gabbi said the planned fireworks are consumer‑grade (smaller mortar sizes) rather than a large professional Fourth‑of‑July show, and that the fire department will check each event for weather and safety conditions before issuing final approval on a per‑game basis.
