The Health and Education Commission approved a request from Collins Family High School to place a small, public “little library” on school property and authorized adding the location to the citywide map. The commission also voted to waive the $55 miscellaneous permit review fee.
Jose, a city staff member, briefed commissioners that “on 04/18/2024, the city council approved resolution 20 24 0 6 for the funding of $25,000 over 5 year span for the little library program.” He said Collins Family High School would provide maintenance and had donated books; staff recommended waiving the $55 misc-review fee and suggested a future partnership for events, including the 100-book giveaway and a read-aloud.
Commissioners discussed a separate, community-installed little library in Veterans/Linear Park with decorative lights and bilingual books; they asked staff to verify that unapproved community installations meet safety and city guidelines before formalizing them on city maps. Jose said planning will require an application to document all libraries and that the $55 fee is a one-time miscellaneous permit fee.
A motion to approve Collins Family High School’s location and to add the library to the citywide map was made and seconded; commissioners voted in favor and the motion passed. The commission recorded that Collins Family High School will maintain the installation and staff will work with planning to finalize documentation and record the location on the city map.
