Volunteer organizers seek larger venue as Free Book Day grows; council hears request during public comment

During the public-comment portion of the meeting, volunteer organizer Kathy Clay asked councilors to publicize and support Free Book Day, an annual event that provides free books to residents. Clay said the inaugural event had 25 adults and 10 children, last year’s event attracted nearly 1,000 people, and this year organizers have collected about 10,000 books.
Clay said volunteers collect books from estate-sale companies and local donors and that the event provides free reading material to families who otherwise might not be able to buy books. She said this year's Free Book Day is scheduled for the last Saturday in September, Sept. 27, and asked councilors to consider larger venues; she suggested Joanne Fabric or other downtown spaces.
Councilors thanked Clay and made several informal suggestions about possible venues. Council did not take formal action; the request was made as public comment and will be handled by event organizers and city staff as appropriate.
