Public‑works staff told the council on Aug. 19 that a submersible pump in a main lift station suffered a seal failure, dropped off its rails and damaged the pumping rails, leaving the system operating on a single pump.
Brady, the public‑works operator, described the 40‑foot deep, 12‑foot concrete wet well and the large submersible pumps used there. He said crews were able to recover the pump with heavy equipment and specialized lines but that rails were damaged and the city will need parts and repairs. Brady estimated the immediate parts purchase at about $4,700; he said the amount is under the city administrator’s procurement threshold and that staff planned to proceed with the repairs.
Councilors were briefed on operational impacts and the need for additional piping if a backup diesel pump is brought online; staff said the repair plan is intended to restore full redundancy in the lift station and to minimize the risk of bypass or overflow while longer‑term capital work proceeds.
No vote was required; staff treated the repair as an administrative emergency procurement within authority limits and will report back on repair completion and any further capital needs.
